The Ethics of Teaching

What does it mean to be an ethical teacher in this century? In this article, we will explore key ethical principles and strategies that guide us, educators, in maintaining our moral integrity while fostering a safe, inclusive learning environment. We should examine our professional behaviors.

We are expected to participate in the life of the community. As teachers, we have different roles. First, we are a facilitator. We make our students’ learning journey a lot easier. In a way, we simplify the abstract or theory to help the students digest the lecturer's main points. As teachers, we always have to remember that “there are no difficult subjects but there are teachers who make it difficult to understand.’’ Therefore, when we become a teacher, we have to make sure that we have developed this skill so that our students can learn the best.

Another thing is the classroom environment. We as teachers should create a conducive classroom that promotes learning and student outcomes. The conditions should be both physically and emotionally supportive. The students are encouraged to participate and express their opinions freely without fear of judgment from others in the classroom. The rapport between us and our students is also essential to help them feel motivated and focused.

To be an ethical teacher today, it’s important to do more than just know our subject. We need to create a space where students feel safe, valued, and excited to learn. By being professional and caring, we can have a positive impact on our students, helping them succeed in school and life.
