In a concerning development, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the ongoing mpox outbreak in parts of Africa a public health emergency of international concern. The highly contagious disease, previously known as monkeypox, has already claimed the lives of at least 450 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the situation appears to be rapidly worsening.

The WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has expressed grave concerns about the potential for further spread within Africa and beyond, stating that "a coordinated international response is essential to stop this outbreak and save lives."

Mpox, which is transmitted through close contact, skin-to-skin contact, and even close proximity to an infected person, can lead to flu-like symptoms, skin lesions, and in some cases, death, with a fatality rate of up to 4 in 100 cases.

This latest outbreak, driven by a more virulent Clade 2 strain of the virus, has already caused alarm globally. In July 2022, the Clade 2 strain spread to nearly 100 countries, including parts of Europe and Asia, resulting in more than 87,000 cases and 140 deaths, according to the WHO.

While the previous outbreak was largely concentrated among men who have sex with men, the current situation in Africa presents a broader challenge, as the virus can infect anyone through close contact.

Jean Kaseya, the head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, has issued a stark warning, declaring a public health emergency and urging immediate action to contain and eliminate the threat. "We must be proactive and aggressive in our efforts to contain and eliminate this threat," Kaseya said.

The WHO's declaration of a global health emergency underscores the severity of the situation and the need for a coordinated international response. Health authorities around the world are closely monitoring the situation and working to implement effective containment measures, including vaccination and public awareness campaigns.
