Literacy: A World of Opportunities

Literacy: A World of Opportunities

To have the right to learn how to read, write, and comprehend information is to be empowered. Annually, we celebrate International Literacy Day in September to indicate the importance of literacy as a fundamental human right for people to grow and develop personally and socially.

The International Literacy Day promotes education as a powerful weapon to alleviate poverty and inequality; it empowers individuals with the skills needed to contribute to their communities. Literacy is not just about reading and writing, but also about encompassing the ability to understand, interpret, create, communicate, and compute using printed and written materials. Besides, this day also encourages our governments, organizations, and communities to take action in enhancing literacy rates, which leads to policy changes, funding for literacy programs, and innovative approaches to education. Furthermore, International Literacy Day draws attention to these global challenges and the ongoing efforts needed to reach literacy across the globe. In this sense, Cambodia has made strides in increasing literacy rate in the society. Recent data shows that the country’s literacy rate has increased to 83.78% in 2022 compared to 82.66% literacy rate in 2021.

Overall, this day plays an important role in building more and more equitable and sustainable communities through the power of literacy.
