Phnom Penh, Cambodia - The government has issued a warning about the onset of unusually hot weather and low rainfall in several areas of the country, urging the public to take necessary precautions. According to the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, higher than average temperatures are expected to persist due to the El Nino effect, exacerbating drought conditions in Cambodia.
Undersecretary of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, Oeurng Chantha, highlighted the significance of the El Nino effect in contributing to the current drought conditions. Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Chantha stated, "The drought conditions we are facing in Cambodia are a direct result of the El Nino effect. This phenomenon has disrupted the regular weather patterns, leading to higher temperatures and reduced rainfall."
As a result of the prevailing weather conditions, water conservation has become crucial. Farmers and those in the agriculture sector are particularly urged to remain vigilant and prepare for potential drought. The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology emphasizes the importance of conserving water resources and implementing sustainable farming practices.
The impact of the scorching heat is being acutely felt by the population, with the heat index steadily rising. Daily temperatures have soared from an average of 40 to 44 degrees Celsius, causing discomfort and posing health risks. In light of this, the public is advised to prioritize personal hygiene, consume nutritious food, stay hydrated by drinking clean water, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially for children and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
The Ministry further cautioned that the El Nino effect is expected to persist in the region surrounding the Pacific Ocean, with rates exceeding 70% until April 2024. This prolonged period of intense heat and diminished rainfall necessitates heightened awareness and preparedness among the population.
Efforts to mitigate the impact of drought and soaring temperatures are underway, with the government closely monitoring the situation and working to ensure the availability of essential resources. The public is urged to stay updated with official announcements and follow guidelines provided by the authorities.
As Cambodia braces for the challenges posed by the persistently hot weather, unity and collective action are crucial in overcoming the potential hardships. By adhering to recommended measures and being mindful of water usage, the nation can navigate through this period of extreme weather conditions and emerge stronger.
