Pchum Ben is an important and family-oriented holiday here in Cambodia, and while locals return to their home provinces, it can also be a unique time to explore a different side of the country. Instead of the common tourist spots, here are some “hidden gems” or unique ways to experience the holiday:
1. Kampot:
This may not be a secret destination, Kampot offers a more intimate and serene Pchum Ben experience in comparison to the bustling cities of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Its laid-back vibe and stunning natural surroundings allow you to witness the holiday’s tradition in a more tranquil setting. Visit local pagodas, see families bringing offerings, take a peaceful boat ride on the Kampot River while observing the local life. The town offers more quiet, spiritual aspects of the holiday and lesser massive spectacle.

2. Mondulkiri:
Known for its rolling hills, waterfalls, and elephant sanctuaries, it offers a completely different landscape. During the holiday, you can observe how ethnic minorities in the region may have their own unique traditions or how they celebrate the event in a more rural, nature-focused environment. Places to visit in the province are Bousra Waterfall or Phnom Nam Lear Sanctuary.

3. Ratanakiri:
It is home to Boeng Yeak Lom, a beautiful volcanic crater lake, and is a hub for eco-tourism. Here, a different pace of life can be experienced, and while you’ll still see Pchum Ben festivities, it’s a chance to combine a cultural experience with a nature getaway.

4. Instead of visiting the large and famous pagodas in major cities, seek out a smaller pagoda in a more rural area, perhaps a little outside the main towns. This is where you’ll get a true sense of the community spirit of Pchum Ben. The atmosphere is more personal and bona fide, as families from the community gather to make offerings and share meals.

Important Things to Keep in Mind this Holiday:
No matter which you prefer, be mindful of the dos and don’ts so that everyone can celebrate the reason for this holiday.
