On October 24, 1945, the United Nations took into force. Since then, we have lived through a lot of world crises but we have kept on rebuilding ourselves and our nations. To celebrate UN Day 2024, here are some quick facts about the organization and its efforts to help Cambodia reach its goals for a sustainable and more inclusive future.
Cambodia has a large population of children with disabilities. According to the 2019 Cambodia Population Census, approximately 37,500 children aged five to fourteen have a disability.
Children with disabilities face significant barriers to education. These barriers include stigma, discrimination, and lack of access to inclusive education programs.
The Inclusive Education Action Plan 2024-2028 aims to address these barriers. The plan focuses on changing societal attitudes, providing necessary tools and support, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders.
The plan aims to ensure that every child has access to quality education. This includes children with disabilities, who are often excluded from mainstream education.
The European Union and USAID are supporting the implementation of the plan. Both organizations have pledged their commitment to inclusive education in Cambodia.
UNICEF is also a key partner in the initiative. UNICEF is working with the government to implement the plan and ensure that every child can thrive.
As manifested in the United Nations’ logo, as long as we work together we are able to create a future that is filled with peace and hope. To commemorate this day, we hope that each of us take our part in embracing inclusivity in our schools, our homes, and our communities so that any place will be a safe space for all.
